Project Overview
Custom Restaurant Lighting Design
Occasionally, we enter a project as a result of a latent design inspiration. In such instances, we pivot and adapt to become an integral part of the existing workflow. Azur in Charleston, SC is an exciting example of our capacity to change directions and adapt to our clients’ needs. For this project, we worked directly with the owners, imagining, designing, and fabricating custom fixtures in sync with their colorful French decor.
Custom Lighting: The Missing Element
When Azur’s owners began remodeling their tapas bistro and wine bar into a full-scale restaurant, custom lighting wasn’t a part of their original plan. They knew they wanted glamorous lighting, but an online search didn’t produce the fun, colorful fixtures they desired. After seeing our work in a regional magazine, they realized that custom lighting was the missing ambiance they hadn’t considered.
The owners contacted us and we met to discuss a collaboration. Having committed to a glamorous, French design scheme, they had already imported wallpaper, art, and decor in fun blues, golds, and greens. CLEOD Glass+Works was integrated partway through the interior design process, but we accepted the challenge of creating compatible lighting fixtures within their ambitious time frame.
Custom Lighting Needs
The client wanted us to design and fabricate decorative and functional lighting systems for the entire restaurant. Our goal: adapt our process to fit a work in progress. While we typically work with more of a blank slate, we understood that our involvement was a last minute decision. Like the missing piece of a puzzle, we incorporated our workflow into what they were already doing.
- Speed: Process escalation to accomplish a quick turnaround.
- Design: Custom illuminated decorative and utilitarian glass fixtures.
- Fabrication: Artisan-creation with non-traditional fabrication methods.
- Process: Adjustments to minimize client’s workload.
- Structure: Suspension configuration to work securely within existing ceiling structure.
- Installation: Extensive on-site preparation and electrical work.
The CLEOD Glass+Works team adapted our design-create-install process to meet Azur’s specifications and completion time frame. We fabricated and installed sconces, bar lighting, and a show-stopping chandelier in the entryway. Our custom illuminated fixtures currently provide decorative and functional enhancements without overwhelming the restaurant space.
