Bellwether Private Residence
Custom Lighting In Gloucester, MA
Project Overview
Custom Residential Lighting
At CLEOD Glass-Works, we’re passionate about creating dynamic custom lighting fixtures that exceed our clients’ expectations. For the Bellwether Private Residence project, we designed and fabricated a bold contemporary lighting fixture for a family residence near Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA.
We collaborated with Carpenter & MacNeille, a well known local design-build firm. The client wanted to upgrade their home’s exterior, while maintaining its rustic charm. For the interior, they decided on a modern look, consistent with their preference for Scandinavian design. They contacted CLEOD Glass+Works as they could find no lighting fixtures on the market that synchronized with the home’s intricate interior remodeling.
Our Design Process
During our initial review of the home’s interior layout, we learned that the builder planned to knock out the entire middle section of the two-story home. The redesign would incorporate a clerestory, creating an open space from the kitchen to the second story ceiling. The client was integral to our process, expressing distinctive ideas as to their chosen design options.
- Handmade, custom lighting by local artisans
- Unique, show-stopping, contemporary
- A smooth, asymmetrical design
- Hangs from the second floor ceiling
- Cascades downward through the open area to the first-story kitchen
Using the original CAD models from Carpenter & MacNeille, we worked through a step-by-step design process. CLEOD Glass+Works presented and revised a series of ideas, and we spent multiple days on site, assessing and confirming placement and space.
Once the client approved our design, we began our creation process. After completing the fabrication, we hung it in our studio to assess its overall composition and appearance. The client came through, approved our work, and we completed the installation.
Custom Lighting Needs
As with every custom lighting project, meeting our client’s needs became our primary goal. The Bellwether Private Residence also presented exciting challenges, requiring atypical solutions and meticulous execution.
- Two-story, show-stopping fixture: Our glass lighting installation would be the home’s nucleus, visible from different angles.
- Ensure an appropriate fit: It must fit in an open but tight and obscure space.
- Unusual Placement: The installation should cascade freely from the second story ceiling to the first floor kitchen.
- Attention to Detail: The fixture would be light and airy, but massive. It would be within touching distance of anyone standing on the second floor. From every conceivable angle, we needed to strike a balance of design, functionality, safety, and security.
CLEOD Glass+Works achieved these objectives through a collaborative process involving the client, designer, architect, engineer, and general contractor, culminating in the creation of the Andromeda, a stunning Two-Story Cloud Cascade Chandelier. Our team finalized the design, completed the fabrication, and carefully installed the fixture to the client’s specifications.

“Working with James and his talented team is a designer’s dream. From the very start of our project together, the collaboration and communication were excellent. James and I dreamed up a stunning chandelier that serves as the showpiece for our project. James listened intently to all of my ideas and goals and translated them into reality. The Cleod team kept us in the loop throughout the process, often inviting us to the workshop to see the pieces in progress and create mockups. He worked with our project team throughout the process, collaborating with the architect (Tim Curtis) to ensure the proper support was in place, and seamlessly coordinating with our site team and carpenters on install day.
It was a pleasure watching the process unfold and I would highly recommend collaborating with James on a custom lighting project. It will surely result in a one-of-a-kind showpiece for your home.”
