Custom Lighting For Restaurants
Epic Chophouse is a classic example of how our custom lighting design + build process evolves from conception through installation. As with many commercial projects, we brainstormed design ideas with the owners and continued the process with their design and construction teams.
Imagining Together
We first met the owners after they had seen our work in Charleston and approached us, inquiring about custom lighting fixtures for the jewel in their growing restaurant collection. They had a firm blueprint for this complex new construction in Raleigh that specified independent chandeliers in designated locations. They envisioned show-stopping illumination and an unforgettable dining experience. While they were open to design ideas, they knew what they wanted to accomplish: ethereal, whimsical, fairy-like designs, for this complex new construction in Raleigh.
After sharing representative samples from our previous projects, the owners had a greater sense of what was possible and what they preferred. They wanted something different and unique, but they weren’t sure what that was.
A Collaborative Effort
The client allowed us the autonomy to make creative decisions about the project. Our designer devised a concept with individual “gemstone” pendants in varying configurations. We worked directly with the restaurant’s general contractor and a design team. Our collaborative relationships made it easier to convey our ideas, fabricate the fixtures, and produce the unique lighting systems the owners wanted.
Custom Lighting Needs

For Epic Chophouse, we followed our established creative process but adapted when necessary:
- Brainstorm ideas and concepts: clients, contractors, designers
- Hand Drawn
Procreate renderings: two dimensional design deck - CAD designs: finalize size, scale, asymmetry, surface textures, colors, reflection
- Multi-stage fabrication: plasma cutters, manual assembly, non-traditional fabrication methods
- Installation: invented a rigging system to hang fixtures, designed and engineered canopies and an intricate electrical system
Epic Chophouse presented several exciting design challenges. The owners wanted a show-stopping lighting experience but they weren’t quite sure what that might be. Our collaboration with experienced architects, contractors, engineers, and designers produced a seamless creative outcome.
This was more complicated than our typical project. Always seeking to meet challenges and committed to innovation, we were successful in designing, creating, and fabricating custom-glass works that met our client’s needs. We created a truly unique lighting experience with immersive suspended gemstone pendants. Each installation resembled drifts of smoke wafting into the air, a whimsical metaphor for its steakhouse environment.
